Social Responsibility
Social Responsibility

Over the last few years, Skansen has developed its Social Responsibility programme to a level that accurately reflects what our employees want to achieve. Naturally it will always evolve, but the one founding principle is that, as a company, Skansen has a moral and social duty to help the wider community whether local, national or global.

We contribute 10% of our operating profits to charitable causes. With this in mind, in early 2007, Skansen formed a partnership with IPI in northern Kenya which aims to uplift the spirit and living standards of locals so that by working together they can be empowered to raise their long-term quality of life in a sustainable way, creating a multiplier effect in the community.

Skansen is working in partnership with IPI, as project programmers for the next five years, to establish numerous sustainable local Community Homes around the town of Meru, the first of which was completed in July 2009. Staffed by community volunteers, these homes provide local housing for orphans throughout their education and act as medical dispensaries. Built on land donated by local villages, the homes act as self-financing beacons for sustainable economic development.

Skansen has thus far channeled £125,000 to IPI through the Skansen Foundation in support of the community home programme. Skansen has also made a number of visits to Meru to assist with the construction works and help IPI more generally. We are now turning our attention to the development of the second complex in Ruiri, leading a sponsored climb of Mount Kenya in November 2010.
